Adjusting to the climate in Orlando; it is cold!

I was warned by many friends that one of the hardest things I would face in Orlando would be the weather. Apparently, Orlando is known more by its hot and humid weather rather than its amusement parks. Funny thing is that my friends were both right and wrong about this. They were right about the adjustment but they were wrong about the cause. Adjusting to the climate, in my case, is not about the heat or the humidity, it is about the cold. Yes, you are reading correctly, it is too cold for me.

Orlando businesses, including my office building, keep the temperature indoors extremely cold. It is probably a reaction to the high humidity in the area, but for me, the coldness in the buildings is extreme. Coupled with refrigerated air, which dries the air, I am literally freezing indoors. For lunch today, I couldn’t get to the balcony fast enough just too warm up. As the newcomer, I was the only one enjoying the heat outdoors while everyone else ate lunch indoors.

Having spent many years closer to the equator, Guadalajara and Mexico City, high humidity doesn’t bother me as much. I am comfortable with it. I also spent many years in the southwest, El Paso and Cd. Juárez, so dry temperatures in the 100’s (40C) are bearable to me. But freezing, as in below zero, ok maybe a little exaggeration here, but that’s how I feel, is very uncomfortable. I am seriously thinking of wearing thermal underwear!

Ok, maybe that’s a little extreme, but I need to acclimate to the freezing temperatures indoor in Orlando if I am going to be effective every day. Asking commercial establishments to raise the temperature indoors probably won’t work so that leaves only one option for me, acclimate my body to the coldness or start working outdoors.
