We Get No Respect: City Hall Grill

taxpayer_norespectRegardless of what side you are on the issue there is no question that the most recent controversial thing in El Paso has been the ballpark. The largest point of contention has been the destruction of the city hall building. Yet, the horde behind the fiasco that is the ballpark has decided to rub some salt on the wound of those who opposed the demolition of city hall by naming the upcoming restaurant the City Hall Grill.

If, for a moment, you thought it possible that the Foster/Hunt cabal had any intention of reconciling with the community that opposed them that notion was promptly dismissed as they announced the restaurant’s name. As if the Chihuahuas name wasn’t bad enough this latest “in your face now shut up and go about your business”, insult clearly demonstrates that the ballpark was never about the community but rather it was about how Foster/Hunt would use the taxpayers to fund their playground.

You will notice that except for KVIA, who reported the naming of the stadium’s restaurant the rest of the news media has been conspicuously silent. The Chihuahuas have been hitting the airwaves and the blogosphere touting their ticket sales and upcoming ball schedule, yet the naming of the restaurant has kept them quiet. I wonder why?

Very simply it is because there is nothing they can spin to make the name palatable to the community.

From the onset, the ballpark has been about using taxpayer funds to create a playground for the wealthy. Never mind that all of the economic indicators clearly show that the ballpark is not a viable economic engine for El Paso. It has never mattered because it was never been about El Paso prosperity. Those that continue to believe the fantasy of the ballpark need only look to this latest debacle, the naming of the restaurant.

Unfortunately, for El Paso the baseball stadium continues to be the nightmare that keeps on giving. The naming of the ballpark restaurant City Hall Grill is just one other example of the disregard the ownership group has for the citizens of El Paso.
