Anthony Cobos Still in Jail Awaiting Trial

cobos-anthony14As the year comes to a close, I am going to post some quick updates on pending items. Today’s installment is Anthony Cobos. As most of you know, Anthony Cobos pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and deprivation of honest services. Cobos pleaded guilty to accepting bribes for refinancing County debt while he was in office.

On January 3, 2014, District Judge Montalvo sentenced Anthony Cobos to four years in federal prison. Montalvo also ordered three years of supervised release for Cobos. Anthony Cobos was also fined $10,000. He was ordered to report to prison on February 11, 2014 to begin serving his sentence.

On January 31, 2014, Anthony Cobos was arrested at his home on charges of defrauding a New Mexico couple on a real estate transaction. According to the indictment, Cobos defrauded the couple by taking their payments for property that Cobos had no right to sell to them.

According to the Doña Ana court records, on February 28, 2014, his fraud case was transferred to the District Court after a Grand Jury issued an indictment. News media reports earlier in the year reported that Cobos had hired an attorney. However, the court records indicate that he is currently being represented by the Public Defender’s office. The lawyer was substituted on November 25, 2014.

The court docket shows that Anthony Cobos is scheduled to go to trial on March 9, 2015.

The Federal Inmate Locator has a record for Cobos but it shows that he is not in the custody of the federal prison system. Although I could not confirm it, it appears that Anthony Cobos is still incarcerated in Doña Ana County.

It remains unclear whether Cobos will receive credit towards his four-year prison sentence for the almost one year he has been incarcerated in New Mexico. It is likely, though, that if he is found guilty that any prison sentence will include time served. Whether Judge Montalvo gives him credit for his New Mexico jail stay is yet to be determined.

  1. Bad guys (and gals) like Cobos need to be stamping out license plates. I actually saw a photo of Flores in the Inc recently! I can’t believe otherwise respectable people will allow themselves to be seen with her.

Then again, this is El Paso.

  2. Martin:

This is a major FU. Cobos inherited the house from his mother. You made the same mistake as D’Antonio, the house belongs to Cobos, who inherited it from his mother. They even collect taxes from Cobos….

Maybe, just maybe, our New Mexico friends do not know that there is a Constitution of the United States and its amendments.

Do you remember “New Mexico is part of the United States Day”?

    It’s going to be funnnnnn.

    Go figure!

  3. PS:

The Court records show that his third defender resigned and he has not been appointed a fourth. And the 3/9 is for a pre-trial conference, and…it’s going to be a year pretty soon….

…but indicting a man for selling his own house….. in New Mexico this is called: “13-1636. Malicious abuse of process”

  4. ya but he never went to jail for corruption..I remember that press conference outside the SLimes building when he called out that fat pig editor and his boy toy munch. Cobos has balls.

  5. Dice Doña Chole, la burrera, que el Tony la cago cuando se le puso a las patadas a la Rita para que no se jambara el melon del Chuco, que la novia de la Rita es la mas calada y se frego al Tony.
