It has now been 68 days into Donald Trump’s first one-hundred days as president. When Trump was running for office he made many promises to the electorate. As of today, Donald Trump has not kept any of the promises he has made. Not one. Trump told the electorate that he was a smart businessman and great negotiator and as such he was going to get things done in the first 100 day of his presidency. He has failed miserably.
In addition to the failures, this is what has bothered me since the first-time Trump disparaged México and Mexicans, like me. That is that I felt that Donald Trump was not going to be able to keep any of his promises but that his promises were going to damage many people and countries nonetheless. In particular México and Mexicans.
Trump’s promises of doing away with NAFTA and his constant attacks against immigrants has put pressure on the Mexican economy. Additionally, it has destroyed the friendship that México and the United States have been carefully developing over the last twenty, or so years. A friendship that kept the United States safe and both economies prosperous.
Donald Trump promised to make America First but he has accomplished other than that. ObamaCare remains the law of the land. There is not a travel ban in place today. And there is much controversy around the Russians and the elections.
Through all of this, Donald Trump has not accomplished a single significant election promise.
The Trump apologists place the blame on the court system, the Obama administration and on the Democrats. But the fact is that the repeal of ObamaCare failed under a Republican controlled Congress. Although the Trump narrative is that it was the Democrats, the facts cannot support that notion.
But through all of this, many travelers and immigrants have been hurt. The friendly relationship between México and the United States has been damaged. The Mexican economy has been hurt. And, as if none of that was enough, many U.S. citizens have been separated from their loved ones by Trump’s draconian immigration enforcement that puts the country in danger because trust between officials and the immigrant population has been damaged.
While there is hope that Donald Trump’s presidency will be short-lived the damage he has inflicted on many will be felt for generations to come.
Trump’s inability to keep his promises has endangered the country.
