Well it is official now; the United States welcomes immigrants if they are white. Some of you are tempted to argue that this is not true. But the facts are what they are. Donald Trump has been telling everyone that for years now. Some have dismissed it as Trump’s “way of talking” or that he is “misunderstood.” It is about “illegal” many proclaim. But the truth is that immigrants are welcome under Donald Trump as long as they are white.
Donald Trump told us this when he launched his presidential campaign telling us that people, like me, are “rapists”. Mexicans, he told us, are people that the country does not want. Of course, he told everyone that Muslims are bad as well. Or that “shithole” countries send their discarded people to the country.
But they are just words some of you argue.
Never mind that the war on immigrants intensifies each day. Workplace raids target the weakest among us for just going to work. Forget the new directive that legal immigrants must not become “public charges”. It is just Trump doing what he can to protect the country, or so he says. Deporting immigrants is the sport among immigration agents who see immigrants as subhuman and keep count on social media as to how many they captured that day.
“Go back to where you came from” is now common vernacular in polite conversation.
But it isn’t uttered just at immigrants, even citizens whose skin color doesn’t match that of Trump’s skin color are told to leave the country. Some gasped at that only to pass it off as another Trump misspeak.
It’s all “fake news” the Trump supporters proclaim.
The country just wants “legal” immigrants, they chant in gleeful unison.
But the gig is up. The chief that administers the agency that grants “legal” status to immigrants told everyone that what the country wants are “people from Europe.”
Yes, those are the words that Ken Cuccinelli, the acting director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, told everyone on Tuesday.
Cuccinelli was arguing that the Statue of Liberty’s “huddled masses” was really referring to “people coming from Europe.”
But, but Donald Trump is married to an immigrant some of you proclaim. You are correct, that’s true and she also used “chain migration” to bring her parents to the country. No one noticed because, she is after all, white.
Now imagine, against the reality that the head of immigration services wants only “Europeans” to come to the country, what it feels like to be a Black, Brown or other dark-colored skin individual waiting in line to see of the county will welcome you.
“Legal” is just a substitute for “white” because telling the world that the country only wants “white” people is just not polite enough in civilized talk about immigration.
But it is true nonetheless. Brown and Black need not apply to Trump’s country.
Based on what I see here at the border with thousands of Central Americans entering illegally, I’d say the government is biased toward POC. When was the last time you saw a Euro immigrant other than Melania Trump?
