Covid-19 Compared to Previous Pandemics

How deadly is Covid-19 seems to be on the minds of many. And, for good reason. Although some tend to believe that the disease is unprecedented, there have been six previous pandemics to hit the United States. The first in 1910 and the latest is Covid-19. To make sense of it all it is important to compare the current death rate with the previous pandemics.

Because the Coronavirus is ongoing with the number changes daily, sometimes hourly we need to be able to compare the death rates while they are still being tallied. To do so, I took the total death rates for each pandemic and divided them by the number of months that the disease was active according to the CDC. This gives us a rate of deaths per month. For Covid-19 I used a four-month cycle although some readers may not believe that is accurate enough.

From these numbers I developed the following infographic comparison.

The important number to look at is the black circle which shows the number of deaths per month.

I plan to periodically update this graphic as more data from Covid-19 is compiled.

For now, this infographic should give us a sense of where we stand with the latest pandemic.

  1. Quarantine Marteen, the difference is Trump cured, lung cancer, heart disease, diabetes, pneumonia, and seasonal flu. All of these illnesses have been rolled into COVID-19 by dishonest hospitals. And Obama’s response took (yawn) 6 months. What a guy.
